A Mighty Adventure

Hope: A Reckless, Rewarding Ride into Cinematic Bedlam

Na Hong-jin, the South Korean auteur behind the cult horror The Wailing (2016), returns after a decade with Hope—a film that makes his previous masterpiece look like a sedate chamber piece. Where The Wailing was a slow-burn descent into supernatural dread, Hope is a full-throttle assault on the senses, a sci-fi creature feature that trades existential dread for relentless, pedal-to-the-metal chaos.

Set in the 1980s in the fictional fishing village of Hope Harbour, near the Korean Demilitarised Zone, the film opens with a mutilated bull carcass—a harbinger of the terror to come. Local police chief Beom-seok (Hwang Jung-min) initially suspects a rogue tiger, dispatching his cousin Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) and his hunting party into the mountains. But what unfolds is far beyond terrestrial explanation. An unidentified alien entity has crash-landed, and it is tearing through the community with terrifying velocity. For nearly an hour, Na masterfully withholds a clear view of the creature, building suffocating suspense through sound and the villagers’ mounting panic. Then, the film detonates into an extended, unrelenting chase sequence that mashes up Mad Max, Aliens, and The Terminator into an adrenaline cocktail. The film is a symphony of squealing tyres, galloping horses, and deafening gunfire, captured with virtuoso camerawork by cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo.

Underpinning this cacophony is an extraordinary score by American composer Michael Abels (Get Out, Us, Nope). His music is the film’s pounding heartbeat, beginning with an eerie, synth-forward dread before erupting into frenetically nerve-shredding orchestral chaos. Abels blends orchestral swells with guttural, percussive pulses that make daylight chases feel nightmarishly vivid, amplifying the panic and providing an exhilarating sonic architecture that elevates Hope from mere mayhem to an unforgettable sensory assault.

Thematically, the film is a study of mutual desperation. The villagers, armed with improvised weaponry and stubborn resilience, fight not just for survival but for the preservation of their insular world. Their hope is for normalcy, for the return of a quiet life. The aliens, glimpsed in the film’s controversial final scenes, are equally stranded and desperate, their own hopes for escape or communication thwarted by the violent collision of two species who cannot understand each other. Both sides are trapped in a cycle of fear and aggression, their hopes curdling into a shared, bloody impasse.

Like many of the Korean thrillers, Hope sacrifices logic and plausibility at the altar of non-stop action. How do the elderly townsfolk possess such an arsenal of heavy weaponry? How does Sung-ki survive enough near-death experiences to rival a cartoon character? These questions are irrelevant. Na is not interested in realism; he is interested in kinetic energy.

Adding international sheen to the proceedings are Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, who appear in motion-capture performances as the aliens. Their presence, alongside Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton, lends a global gravitas to the chaos, though the film’s soul remains firmly Korean, anchored by the charismatic trio of Hwang, Zo, and Squid Game’s Jung Ho-yeon.

The ending, which has divided audiences, is deliberately open. A mid-credits scene and a final conversation between two aliens strongly imply a sequel. Director Na has confirmed that a follow-up script is ready, with the second instalment reportedly told from the aliens’ perspective.

Check in your brain at the door. This is not a film for the logic-obsessed. It is a rollercoaster ride of thrill and chill, a wildly entertaining, gloriously bonkers piece of cinematic mayhem that demands to be experienced on the biggest screen possible. Hope is a reckless, roaring triumph of pure, unadulterated action cinema.
