Cold War 1994: A Riveting Prequel That Rewrites Hong Kong’s Underworld History

The Cold War franchise returns triumphantly with Cold War 1994, a prequel that revitalises the Hong Kong police thriller and adds profound historical depth. Set in sweltering, anxious Hong Kong on the precipice of the 1997 handover, the film is a masterclass in tension, anchored by stellar performances.

The Crucible of 1994

Director Longman Leung embeds his story in the uniquely uncertain atmosphere of 1994. Colonial elites jockey for position, their fortunes built on a shadowy legacy. British dynasties like Jardine Matheson (which amassed wealth trading opium into China) and local families such as the Lees of Hysan transition into legitimate enterprises, leaving a palpable sense of chaos and opportunity—a powder keg where ambition turns into cold war.

A Necessary Recap

The original Cold War (2012) saw a police van hijacked, triggering a power struggle between deputy commissioners Sean Lau (Aaron Kwok) and M.B. Lee (Tony Leung Ka-fai). Cold War 2 (2016) escalated: now Police Commissioner, Lau is framed and teams with his disgraced rival to expose a cabal of former British officials and local elites.

Cold War 1994

The story unfolds in 2017 when a security chief goes missing. Lau re‑opens a sealed 1994 case file, revealing a kidnapping of the billionaire Pan family that ignites a power struggle between a hot‑headed young officer (Terrance Lau) and a cold, ambitious Deputy Commissioner, Choi Yuen‑kei (Daniel Wu). The patriarch (Tse Kwan‑ho) and his dangerously calculating son (Wu Kang‑ren) bring electrifying tension, while Louise Wong’s cunning female triad leader adds fierce energy. Jaw‑dropping cameos include Chow Yun‑fat, Louis Koo, and Tony Leung Ka‑fai. The relentless pacing builds to a white‑knuckle chase through disused Kai Tak Airport.

The Cold War Continues

Cold War 1994 is a triumph, injecting new life into the franchise while honouring its legacy. A stunning finale directly sets up Cold War 1995, releasing later this year. Not to be missed.
