Number One: The Countdown to Sentimentality

Kim Tae-yong’s Number One arrives with considerable pedigree, reuniting Parasite’s Choi Woo-shik with Jang Hye-jin as mother and son, and following the director’s acclaimed Giant. The premise is intriguingly magical: whenever Ha-min tastes his mother’s home cooking, he sees a mysterious number counting down. Ha-min, convinced zero spells her death, begins refusing her lovingly prepared meals, creating a chasm between them. It’s a concept ripe for exploration of filial anxiety and the quiet terror of losing a parent.

The performances are, predictably, the film’s greatest asset. Choi Woo-shik’s restrained anguish feels authentic, while Jang Hye-jin brings the necessary warmth and hurt to a mother bewildered by her son’s sudden distance. Their chemistry, honed in Bong Joon-ho’s masterpiece, remains potent. Kong Seung-yeon, as Ha-min’s girlfriend, provides a much-needed catalyst, injecting energy whenever the narrative risks stagnation.

And stagnate it does. The director opts for a tortoise-like pace that, while perhaps intended to mirror the ritual of cooking, ultimately feels indulgent. The middle act, in particular, loses dramatic inertia as the characters repeat their emotional miscommunications with diminishing returns.

The greatest failing, however, is the finale. What should be a cathartic, tearful crescendo arrives as a predictable, sentimental resolution that undermines the more subtle work preceding it. The film reaches for profundity but settles for the comfortable and familiar, leaving the viewer with the sense of having been expertly guided toward an emotional payoff that feels unearned.

Number One is, ultimately, a well-acted misfire—a warm, comforting bowl of soup that satisfies in the moment but is quickly forgotten. Its heart is undeniably in the right place, but its execution lacks the seasoning of genuine surprise.
